Welcome Message

Hello!
Welcome to Moviepoetics.com, a site where I hope t0 discuss filmmaking especially from the point of view of storytelling and narrative structure. I would like to state up front that while guests can post whatever opinions they like, I am not in the business of offering my "opinions" of films. Whether I like a film or not is irrelevant and being a filmmaker I would prefer not to come down negatively (or positively for that matter) on known works for fear of reprisal. Rather I intend to look at the narrative mechanisms behind various films and try and ascertain two things: 1. Why the filmmakers structured their story the way they did, and 2. What effect did it have on the audience.

Thanks,

Michael Tierno

Congratulations on the new site and blog!

I'm new to the concept of Poetics to the art of movie storytelling. Would you be willing to provide an example from a recent movie favorite of mine?
I have tried to apply the principles of poetics to "The Royal Tenenbaums." Are you familiar with the work? If so, can you comment on how Poetics might be applied, so that I can understand the concept more completely?
Thanks!

Hello Skip W. It's been a while since I've seen "Tennebaums" but I'll see if I can dig it up and offer some comments. Thanks for the inquiry.

Thanks, but no need to go out of your way to find Tenenbaums. Perhaps you can give me an overview of something else that you have seen recently, which I can rent from Netflix?
I don't want to make this work for you. As a movie fan, it's all fun to me. You work in the industry, so I can appreciate that you may not have the time or inclination to watch a movie in the same leisurely way that I do.
Thanks for the reply!

Michael, Congrats on the blog. I look forward to reading it.

I just did a review of your book, Aristotle's Poetics for Screenwriters, on my podcast - Filmmaker One.

Check it out at http://filmmakerone.com
